What is Lomilomi?

My understanding of lomilomi is beyond the physical touch. Like many Hawaiian arts, it is guided by our ancestors, deities, and environment. The person doing the lomilomi is the mea lomilomi or mea hoʻōla.

Each mea lomilomi has a traditional Hawaiian lineage whom they formally trained under. Without lineage and spirituality, it is called massage, not lomilomi.

My name is Kainoa Keanaaina. I have been doing lomilomi for more 7+ years. I approach each session differently dependent on many factors such as:

My focus is taking care of my ʻohana and close peers here on Kauaʻi, in some circumstances if everything aligns, I will lomilomi beyond that circle. I believe we affect our whole community and environment by the things we do and don't do.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

Complete the forms prior to the appointment. I will arrive a few minutes early to setup. Hydration before and after your session is recommended.

Where do you lomilomi out of

I go to where the client is. I am strong believer in doing lomilomi where the client feels more comfortable.

How much does it cost?

Traditionally, lomilomi was done by a designated healer in the community. They would be paid by food, gifts, land, and more. Once US commodity was introduced, there has been a huge debate between compensation. I accept donations, I can't give you a price point, amount, or what. Donations do matter as they contribute to any mea lomilomi's journey such as supporting their ʻohana, their learning, and their capacity to focus on only lomilomi vs getting another job to support the practice.
